Too Hot Out the Gate:

Why a Rabbit Might not be the Best Choice for a First Vibrator

Written by Landa Fox, Certified Sexual Health Educator

Ah, the “rabbit.” These sex toys have certainly built themselves quite the reputation over the last, oh, 24 years. That’s when the “rabbit” made it’s big pop culture review in an Episode of Sex and The City on HBO (you can read about that episode’s impact here). It’s no wonder people are endlessly curious about this style of vibrator. People get excited when they think about the possibilities of a toy that can “do it all.” But, hold up there little cutie! Is this actually a good choice for a first vibrator? Let’s chat.

First, why is it called a rabbit? The main reason is that many models of this style of vibrator (more broadly referred to as dual-stimulation vibrators) have a small piece that is designed to provide clitoral stimulation that, well, looks like a bunny. They often have two ears that are meant to surround the clitoris and provide indirect stimulation. Some even have a little ‘nose’ or nub that can also make contact with the clitoris and surrounding sensitive tissue. For some this animalistic design provides a type of stimulation they like. But this wasn’t the original rationale. It is a hold-over from when the vibrators were first manufactured in Japan and they needed to work around obscenity laws. Many available now don’t look like rabbits at all.

Next, what’s the purpose of having dual-stimulation? These vibrators have an internal piece and an external piece. The internal piece is designed to stimulate the vagina and all of

the sensitive and erectile tissues inside (g-area/spot). Some do this by vibrating, others by thrusting, others by twirling, some by expanding – and more! The external piece is designed to provide clitoral stimulation. Some do this by flicking (like the aforementioned ears), others by sucking, some vibrate in patterns or a steady vibration, and still others stimulate through pressure. The idea of combining these into one toy is to make it a single-handed (literally) event. But……..does it ?

Lastly, the straight goods. For some people rabbits are the frisky little friend they have been searching for. But for many, they just…..don’t…..quite work. As we’ve said before: “every body is different.” Finding a good fit with a rabbit can be tough. That’s why we often don’t recommend that this is where people start their journey into the world of vibrators. We

recommend people find a toy they like for external/clitoral use and then find a toy they like for internal/vaginal use and use those together – at least to start. Once you know what you like in and out, it is much easier for us to help you find the right rabbit! We swear, this is not an upsell technique to get you to buy two toys. We honestly believe it is the best way to go and get you what you need. When you are ready for a dual-stimulation vibe – we love the Nova 2 by We-Vibe! Seriously!
